The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader jumps in straight at the top of the UK box office but an opening weekend of just £2.4m (including preview takings of £264k) means it’s far from a spectacular start for the third entry in Walden Media’s fantasy series. In fact, Narnia seems to be suffering badly from the law of diminishing returns with 2005’s The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe opening to the tune of £8.8m and sequel Prince Caspian banking £4.06m, and with this latest instalment faltering despite the added attraction (and increased ticket price) of 3D, you have to wonder if this could be the end of the road for Aslan and company.
Moving on, previous box office champ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 slips to second and adds another £1.9m to push its total gross beyond £42m, while The Tourist opens in third, pulling in just £1.3m despite the presence of Hollywood A-listers Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The two new entries obviously had a knock-on effect on the rest of the chart with Megamind, Unstoppable, Due Date and Monsters each slipping two spots to occupy fourth down to seventh.
Heading towards the bottom of the chart a couple of other new releases manage to make an appearance: Sofia Coppola’s Golden Lion-winning drama Somewhere takes eighth (with its haul of £125k delivering a career low for the director on these shores), while Bollywood comedy No Problem settles for ninth with £114k. Finally George Clooney thriller The American tumbles four places to prop up the chart in tenth in its third weekend.
Number one this time last year: A Christmas Carol
