In a story posted by Gentry Estes of Dawgs247.com, coach Mark Richt spoke about the tailback situation as it stands now and what he feels the team will do in light of Washaun Ealey's exit from the program. From the looks of it, Richt isn't worried about the effect the troubled tailback's departure will have on the rest of the team as he seems to be fairly confident that there are plenty of others who will be able to pick up the slack.
The guy he has the most raves for, at the moment, is Caleb King. King was the most vocal and the most active of the running backs this past spring as far as his overall need to prove his worth.
He's been diligent in his work ethic, thus far, and has stated publicly that this will be the year he finally proves what a value he can be to this team—and I suspect the exit of Washaun Ealey will only solidify that commitment—although if he's not eligible come fall...well, that could be a problem*.
In any case, Richt isn't willing to tip his cap towards any one player where the starting role is concerned as he made it very clear that the job is still wide open—even when five-star product Isaiah Crowell arrives this summer—said Richt, "I don’t anticipate him [Caleb King] being the only one that’s going to carry the ball this year..." and "...No one has really nailed that thing down and established himself as 'The guy'..."
As far as Georgia Bulldog fans are concerned, it won't matter who wins the job if the offensive line isn't better than the 2010 version showed itself to be. Ken Malcome looked promising as an every down back in the G-Day game and Caleb King can definitely be an asset when he's got his head in the game, but if the line isn't opening some lanes, none of that will mean jack come September.
Either way, the team is moving on with what they have and looking towards the future as it pertains to tailback. They are already looking at several big name guys for 2012 and the arrival of Crowell this summer should light a fire under everyone on the team if he performs as advertised.
*As a side note, Richt also mentioned that the team is still awaiting grades to find out who will be eligible this fall—as of now, he estimates they only have about 25 percent of the grades in at the moment and "It’ll be Monday before all the grades are in and we’ll be able to know where everybody stands." So, keep your fingers crossed.
