My Personal Review for Anything For You by Ethan Day

You know you found the perfect author to read when you start smiling within the first five pages of one of their books. Ethan Day is  one of my favorite GBLT authors and nope I am not stalking him *shakes head as I click through his website seeing what else I can read*, I claim to be a very devoted fan. * hides the pink silly string*

Anything For You is his latest release and one I fell off my chair laughing while reading. I can attest my butt and hip don't like Ethan right now but I don't count them too much in the whole "stalking the author" plan. *snickers*

Ethan Day has another winner with Jason Miller finding that staying in the closet is about as hard as falling in love...with your polar opposite in fact. Chad Wellington is out and proud to be a gay man. Falling for Jason was easy.....getting Jason to admit to himself that it was ok to be gay and out was a little bit tougher. The snarky comments from Jason had me giggling, the acceptance from Chad was a delight and the holy moly, melt the panties sex scenes had me wishing I could call DH home for an afternoon "lunch break". *fans face*

Two opposites attract yet somehow managed to be just perfect for one another is what ANYTHING FOR YOU is about. Mr. Day is a talented author who definitely has the feel for his characters and lets them have their fun while telling a highly entertaining story. If you are looking for a sweet, romantic story that will leave you with a smile on your face then grab ANYTHING FOR YOU. I am hoping Mr. Day comes back to Jason, Chad and their friends in the future. I would love to see what they are doing next.

Want your Ethan Day fix? Stalk...err check him out...oh hell with it.....run over to his website and see what lovely books he has out and coming soon. If you see me there....walk away...slowly....like you don't see me. *grins*

My Personal Review for Crunch Time by Andrew Grey

I love Andrew Grey and I am not afraid to say it. *grins* I guess you can say I am one of his many fans and love the fact he creates some amazing character driven stories that completely captivate the reader from the first page.

Now my review of his latest book in the Gym series, CRUNCH TIME.

George Higgins never anticipates finding a forever love with anyone. He is content to teach his fourth grade students, work out with friends and have quiet nights. When he is asked to help out a soon to be former football player named Darren White, he thinks nothing will happen from it. To his surprise, Darren White is eager for his help and quite sexy to boot. Now in the midst of helping Darren, George is falling for one man who he thinks is out of his league.
Darren White needs help finding his way again in life. After a career ending injury leaves him adrift, he finds himself hoping that the television job is something he can do. With the help of George, Darren finds that he can have a new career if he can just trust himself-and George-to succeed. Falling in love with George never felt so good or so right.

CRUNCH TIME is one story that will leave you smiling in the end. It's a sweet, romantic story of two people who start out as teacher and student and falling for one another. Andrew Grey is one talented author who is a master at creating character driven stories that resonate with the readers. I love this author's writing. It's like coming home from a long time away to find you never really left. The writing is tight, storyline is fast paced and the characters are so realistic, you feel like you could meet them for coffee on any given day. There are some returning characters from prior Gym stories (Spot Me, Pump Me Up and Core Training) and had a few humorous moments that had me laughing out loud.

If you enjoy stories where the characters drive the story, then grab any of Andrew Grey's books. I can highly recommend any of them for an afternoon of reading pleasure. I can not wait to see what else this author has up his sleeve for his readers next in the future.

My Personal Review for Cowboy Easy by Stormy Glenn

Stormy Glenn introduces us to a new series with some hot cowboy brothers. I got to admit this was one smokin' hawt story and one I am hoping to read again once I grab it in print.

My review for Cowboy Easy, Blaecleah Brothers Book 1
Siren Publishing
Available in Ebook and Print
MM Cowboy Contemporary Erotic Romance

Lachlan Blaecleah comes across two local bullies beating a strange man on the road. He never anticipated that saving this man’s life would bring him face to face with the one person who is meant to be his for all time. The minute he sets eyes on Asa Miller, the world stopped and Lachlan fell hard for the young man. Can Lachlan find a way to convince Asa to stay on with him after that one hot night together?

Asa Miller was stunned to look up and see a handsome cowboy saving his life. A knight in jeans and boots, Asa is wary of trusting something whenever life goes right for a change. Falling for someone like Lachlan has Asa in a confused knot. Can Asa find a way to trust the feelings he has for Lachlan in order to have his happily ever after?

Stormy Glenn delivers a new series to her readers and one that had me drooling the minute I met Lachlan and Asa. Holy smokin' hot was all I thought when we first met these sexy studs in the beginning and man, did Stormy Glenn keep the sexual tension flowing hot and fierce. I swear I all but melted when these two came together in a way that had me fanning myself to cool off.

The characters are well rounded and had some hidden vulnerabilities that had me intrigued and I was enthralled till the very end. Ms. Glenn definitely delivers in her introduction to the Blaecleigh Family and I am eager to see who gets hit next by the love bug.

If you are looking for a hot, western MM book, grab Cowbiy Easy and settle in for some hot manlove. I guarantee you will be wanting to grab the  next one in the series immediately after the last page is read.

My Review for Wolfman Apocalypse by Brannan Black

You know you found the perfect book when all you can do as you read that last page is go "WHAT???? What do you mean there is no more?" in a wail that probably rivals a banshee's call. Brannan Black delivers all that and more in the introduction to a post-apocalyptic world where men are turned into stuff of nightmares and myths. Here is my personal review for WOLFMAN APOCALYPSE.

The world has gone to hell....literally. A plague has decimated the world, killing some, and turning others into mindless wolf men. Daniel is the last gay man it seems in the world and along with a few of the survivors, tries to live in alife so changed, he doesn't want to remember the BP, or before Plague, time.

Daniel saw what those rabid animals have done to the human survivors and is afraid when he is confronted by a band of them...that is until the leader grabs him and takes him with them. Then Daniel finds his life is about to get interesting....or more deadly. Daniel now has to figure out if living with these different wolf men is better than living on the outside with the survivors or with the leader of the bad, Mace?

I got to admit....the fact this had my favorite theme-apocalypse-got me front and center. Add in strong characters, a fast paced storyline and yes hot, "oh my god where's my panties?" sex scenes-you got the makings of a series that will knock you back and make you wonder "what if?".

Brannan Black is one talented author in my opinion. Here we have two strong alpha males, granted one has claws, sharp teeth and brute strength & the other a penchant for mouthing off. Hey, I didn't even think Daniel was going to live long past chapter one until you saw the sparks fly between Mace, the leader of this band of civilized, or I should say, somewhat civilized pack of wolfmen. Each page was something new in the story...be it Daniel mouthing off, Mace seducing him or something new that added dimension to this novella.

All I can say is...damn...where can I get a Mace and Daniel for my very own? *grins* So if you are looking for a hot MM Futuristic werewolf story that is a bit unique then I suggest you grab WOLFMAN APOCALYPSE. I swear you won't be disappointed at all and if you are, why Mace will probably tear your arms off. :-P

Guest Author Day with Penny Brandon

Why don't you start with telling us a little about yourself? What genre do you write in and why?

I live in NSW Australia, close to the beautiful Blue Mountains. Born and raised in England, I moved to Ireland and lived there for four years before pulling up roots and moving to Australia in my early twenties. I love to travel, and I go back to England and Ireland for visits but intend to see more of Australia and bring those travel experiences into my books.

I write m/m erotic romance which I absolutely love. To me there is nothing more inspiring than writing about two people falling in love, and when both of them happen to be male, it just makes it more interesting.

Were you an avid reader as a child? What type of books did you enjoy reading?

My first book was Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, which are crime/adventure books for children. I read the whole series of twenty one books when I was about ten years old. Then somewhere in my teens I found horror -- which I became addicted to. I still read it. The gorier the better.

Tell us a bit about your latest book, and what inspired you to write such a story.

Blind Passion is about Adam, who believes no one would be interested in a relationship with him because of his lack of sight, and Luke, who’s hiding something in his past he doesn’t want Adam to find out. A special link binds them together, but it takes patience, gentleness and trust to make them fall in love.

I love characters that work to overcome their fears and are prepared to face challenges life throws at them. What inspired me to write this story was my own challenge of writing scenes where a main character couldn’t see. It made it interesting because he had to use his other senses to “see” things. A lot of fun when thinking up the sex scenes.

Did your book require a lot of research? How long does it take to write a book for you?

Blind Passion did require more research than normal because I had to study ways a blind person interacts with the world around him. I wanted to be accurate on how acute his other senses would be and how he could train himself to use them better. It took me about three months to write the story, then another three months to edit it. From start to finish that seems to be the average length of time for me to get an idea out of my head and on to paper.

If you could have any vice without repercussions, what would it be?

I’d eat more chocolate.

If you could have been the servant to any famous person in history, who would that be and why?

I would never want to be a servant to anyone, but let’s just say I wouldn’t have minded bringing cups of tea to Mary Shelley while she was writing Frankenstein or to Bram Stoker while he was penning Dracula.

What do you see for the future of publishing and e-books?

E-publishers are going to become the leaders of the industry. There are so many medium devices with which to download e-books to and there are so many genres in which readers may not want to go to a bookshop for, so the idea of being able to download a book instantly and remain anonymous is a distinct advantage.

Which of your characters do you love/hate/fear/pity the most and why?

I actually pitied Luke in Blind Passion because he was so scared of loving Adam and being rejected, but it was only because he was hiding something from his past. What I felt for Adam was nothing short of admiration. Despite his lack of sight he lives his life to the full.

I fell in love with Kyle from Bringing Him Home because though he put himself in a bad situation he tries everything he can to redeem himself to Jared.

I could never hate or fear any of my characters because they just wouldn’t be mine otherwise.

Do you get along with your muse? What do you do to placate her/it/him when she/it/he refuses to inspire you?

If I have a muse I’d love to meet him. It would have to be a man because of what goes on in my head. Where are you my man of inspiration? Maybe chocolate is my muse…

Do you have another book in the works? Would you like to tell readers about your current or future projects?

I have several books bouncing around in my head (must be the chocolate). The characters are set, the plots are ready, I’ve just got to get my fingers onto a keyboard. I’ve just had Bringing Him Home accepted by Loose-Id, a m/m contemporary which has both protagonists agonizing about living together in a rural town. I’ve also got a series I’m working on about a mirror that shows you your one true love. Kind of clique I know, but there are twists. I also have a proposal, Murphy’s Law, with Loose-Id for a “December Holiday” collection they are doing. If it all works out well I could have at two to three more books out this year. I keep up to date postings on what I’m doing on my blogpage www.pennybrandon.blogspot.com if readers would like to follow.

Have you ever experience weird cravings while you write? If so, what kind?

Please see above re the chocolate. I’ve eaten two HUGE bars in one sitting while on a writing spree. Why is chocolate good for the creative process but bad for my hips?

Which do you prefer:
Denim or Leather on a man/woman/significant other?
Denim. The softer the better.
Irish or Italian accent in a man?
My husband is Irish. Does that answer your question?

Front seat or Back seat to make out in?
Only a teenager would make out in the front. I once was a teenager…

Dark eyes or Light eyes?
Actually I like hazel because they change color in moments of passion.

Sleeping bag or Bed?
Bed. Softer and more room. Though you can really snuggle in a sleeping bag.

Dinner or Movie for a first date?
I would prefer a dinner as a first date, but my husband took me to see Bambi. I cried. Seriously, who would take a woman to see a film about a deer that dies?

Coffee or Tea?
Neither, can’t stand the stuff. Give me a plain glass of ice cold milk. Isn’t chocolate made of milk?

Chiseled jaw line or Chiseled abs?
I’d go for the abs though I’d know they’d never last but at least the guy went to a lot of effort to get them.

If you got three wishes from a genie, what would they be? (They can be silly, serious or in between).
Wish one. To become a character in one of my books, but then I’d have to write a m/f/m ménage.
Wish two. Go back to my mid twenties but have the knowledge I have now.
Wish three. Yeah, you guessed it, a never ending bar of chocolate – without putting on weight.

If you could spend a day with one actor/actress, who would it be and what would you do together?
I would love to spend the day with Sandra Bullock and try to persuade her to turn one of books into a movie. Failing that I wouldn’t mind taking a trip to the Grand Canyon and some of the Old West ghost towns.

What is on your bucket list to do before you pass from this earthly plain?
Jump out of a perfectly good airplane with a parachute that works.
Swim with some sharks.
Travel to the most northern/southern/western/eastern tip of Australia.
Go on an African Safari.

 Sneak Peek into Blind Passion
Available at Loose Id Publishing
MM Contemporary Paranormal

Attraction for Adam was not a handsome face, a striking smile, or beautiful eyes, but a scent that would drive him to distraction or a voice that could make his heart beat faster. When the combination of the two walked into his life in Luke, Adam couldn’t help but want him. But how was he supposed to know if Luke felt the same attraction? He had no prior experience, no past encounters, nothing to help him. Not even his sight.
One look at Adam and Luke wanted him. Sensual, gorgeous, kind, with a strength that Luke was drawn to, Adam was everything Luke desired. Being in Adam’s arms, showing him the pleasure of a man’s body, being touched, held, and desired in return, had Luke wanting more, had him wanting what he knew he couldn’t have.
It didn’t matter to him that Adam was blind, but Adam deserved more than someone like him. Luke was a man with a broken past and falling in love with Adam was a foolish thing to do, especially because Adam would never love him back if he found out what Luke was hiding.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices, voyeurism.

Excerpt:

Adam groaned, releasing the banked-up tension and frustration that threatened to overwhelm him. He’d never felt this way before, never been turned on like this. Being gay wasn’t a problem; it was just another circumstance he lived with, like his blindness. It was just that his blindness made being gay hard, if not impossible to act on or even appreciate. He could never tell if another man was interested in him. He didn’t know what signals to pick up on or what signals to give. Until now that hadn’t really been an issue, because he’d never felt an attraction for anyone. But he was undeniably attracted to Luke, and he honestly didn’t know what to do about it. Getting hard in front of Luke was definitely not something he should do, but it wasn’t something he could control either.
The instant Luke had walked into his home four days ago, Adam had been intensely aware of him. Luke smelled like a hot summer’s day just after the grass had been cut and before a rainstorm was about to break; he sounded like a soft breeze whispering across a pebbled beach—soothing yet edgy. Combined, they triggered something deeply primal in Adam. He needed Luke, needed to hear his voice, to smell him…touch him.

And God help him—if there was one thing he desperately wanted to do, it was to taste him.

Adam rubbed his hands over his face and winced. He was an idiot for thinking about Luke that way. He was an idiot for thinking about
any man that way. He sighed, resigned, acknowledging what he knew to be an unending fact—his blindness would make sure it was never going to happen.

Guest Author Day with Ike Rose

1. What do you write and why?
I began writing gay Erotica, beginning to write Romances to try to get published, since all my erotic stories ended in relationships, although not always conventional ones. After a LOT of rejections, I discovered erotic Romances. I have a strong pull towards the paranormal – my recently published story has a subtle hint of precognitive foreknowledge at the beginning that is revealed at the end.

Almost everything I write takes place between 1965 to 1985, making me a “historical romance writer”. Even though I lived through this is a time period, I find myself doing a lot of research. I write in that time period because it was the time of my own struggles coming out, and my own sexual blossoming. I've been in a monogamous relationship for twenty-nine years, so I have a very poor picture of the gay male scene today, while I have clear memories of my younger days.

As the product of a blue-collar family and neighborhood, I tend to focus on the struggles working class gay men had back then accepting their homosexuality; the battle that I went through from 16 to 24.

2. What do you read and why, especially if it's different from what you write?
I'm a voracious reader. I'll read the back of a cereal box if there's nothing else.

I got that way because I broke my leg in fifth grade riding my bike to Harvey Fierstein's house, and I spent a whole summer with a cast from my toe to my hip. All I could do was read.

My dad took us to the library every Saturday, but I'd have read all of my books by Wednesday, so I'd read my kid sister's books, too. I'm the only guy I know who read the entire “Sue Barton, Student Nurse” and “Nancy Drew” series.

Currently, I'm reading erotic Romances of all sorts to understand the genre better. (Contributions in e-pub welcome – I'm retired and on a limited income.)

3. What's your latest release and tell me about it:

It's my FIRST release, the novella “My Valentine Prince” in the anthology “My Sexy Valentine”. It takes place from 1975 to 1977, and is the story of a blue-collar young man with a college education battling his fears of his sexuality until one night, he wanders into a gay bar and meets the man of his wet-dreams, a sailor. After a week of passion, the sailor leaves.

James has to struggle against the “old boy network” to get a job in the field for which he studied, and ends up dating his ex-boss after he gets a promotion. On  Valentine's Day 1977, he thinks he's found his Prince Charming until the sailor shows up, declaring his love just before his boyfriend does. Jim must choose: his first love, or the man he spent a year developing a relationship with.

4. What publisher(s) do you write for?
So far I've only published the one novella in the anthology with Sizzler Editions. I have a good working relationship with Sascha Illyvich, their editor for erotic Romances, who edited “My Sexy Valentine”, and I learned a lot of writing-craft from him. I hope to work with him more.

I'm still giving my erotica away for free on the NIFTY Archives. I may self-publish more polished versions of these in the near future.

5. How long have you been writing?
I wrote some professional articles for journals under my real name, as well as some self-help/advice articles for an organization's newsletter, but I began writing erotica a number of years ago out of boredom; my lover works at night.

I shared some of these with online buddies, who encouraged me to post them online. I rewrote them, trying to improve the quality and emphasizing the relationships. I hate badly written erotica.

In June of 2010, I finally started to post these stories on NIFTY, a free erotica stories website. I started getting fan-email from strangers, many writing of the vividness of the characters and the plots as well as the hot action. By July I had so many of these fans that I had to start sending out a Newsletter each time I posted a new story or a chapter to one of my three ongoing series. I got two new fan e-mails today, in fact. I have over 90 men and women on the list, and they encouraged me to write romances.

I'm an “advanced student” writer. My editor had me totally rewrite my 20,000 word story from first person POV to third person. I'd written three short stories in third person before then. HE insists it made it a better story – I almost lost my mind.

6. How do you world build?
It's my world, the one I grew up in and lived in as a younger man. I do write contemporary stories, but it's still my world I'm writing about. However, I DID joke in response to a comment on a Blog recently that I might create an alternate universe where sexually transmitted diseases didn't exist and miniature cell phones like the ones on Dick Tracey were introduced in 1960. “The best of all possible worlds.”

7. It’s the month of love and romance. What was the funniest/ greatest Valentine your Significant Other ever gave you?
Twenty-nine years is a long time together, and we don't make a big deal about Valentine's Day.

When we began dating, he did something very sweet the first night he slept at my place. (Just slept – get your minds out of the gutter!) He neatly wrote out the lyrics to the Carole King song “You've Got A Friend” in the form of a note addressed to me. I woke up to find it on the pillow. I knew then that although he wasn't “that Dream Man” I'd been searching bars for, I'd found Prince Charming. It's framed and hangs over our bed still.

8. How do you build characters and their personalities and looks?
Two ways: people I know or knew in my life, and what I call “gay archetypes”. Some of my characters are, frankly, gay cliches. Big burly hairy men who are massively endowed and smoke cigars, but have gentle souls. Weaker, shorter hairless men who control them with their powerful wills. I love hairy redheads.

I'm writing a series on NIFTY called “Jimbo and JJ” which I realized after I finished the third chapter will end up a novel, minus most of the sex scenes. This is just the prep work; the sex scenes are for fun. These men are the opposite of those cliches: 18 year old college freshman who are under 5'5” and modestly endowed, discovering they're gay and falling in love when they become roommates the fall before the Stonewall Riots. The hero is a man with body image issues. I plan introducing a wheel-chair bound wrestling coach based on a man I met on AOL, a gifted athlete who lost both legs to a hit-and-run driver while jogging. He's so positive and upbeat. I admire him greatly.

9. Tell me about some of your heroes and heroines:
So far, just heroes. James is the hero of “My Valentine Prince”; a tough young man who works harder than anyone to raise swiftly up the corporate ladder, but with a core of insecurity about his ability to find his true love. He's a slightly more macho version of me back then.

10. Are you a pantser or plotter?

I had to Google “pantser”! I'm a combination. I have a basic idea of where I'm going, and often have notes, but usually I let myself go and see where my characters take me. I've had some surprises.

But I'm fairly new to Romance fiction. As I learn more “theory”, I discover things about my stories. When I was doing my massive rewrite of “My Valentine Prince” to third person POV, I realized I had the wrong ending. I'd read a writing Blog that gave me the idea to deconstruct the story, STARTING from the new ending. I knew WHERE I wanted my hero to end up, I even had an idea of the confrontation scene that lead to it. But until I wrote those two scenes, I had no idea of how to get there from the middle. That made me realize that I had to take a nice-guy character and make him... well, one reviewer wondered what the hero saw in him in the first place. I had to make a man I liked into a bad guy, and I had to make it a gradual change.

Otherwise the ultimate decision the hero made would have seemed arbitrary instead of mature, reasoned and right.

11. What genre haven’t you tried, yet, that you would love to explore?

Mysteries with humor. I loved the Simon Kirby-Jones series by Dean Jones, and would love to do something as funny and twisted as those.

12. If you could take one of your characters out on the town, who would it be and what would you do?

It would have to be in the historical context of “My Valentine Prince”, the mid-1970's, when I drank. I only wrote one real scene for Jim's father, but I fell in love with the guy. I'd like to go to a blue-collar bar with him and get stinking drunk, trading stories. My late dad was also a sailor, but never talked to me about his days at sea. I found his diary of his first voyage when I was 16, and was titillated by his description of being taken to his first striptease show while at basic training, and a few other adventures I'd have loved to ask about.

13. Favorite naughty dessert and decadent drink.
Cheesecake. As a Brooklynite, I will commit blasphemy and state that the best cheesecake in New York is NOT from Junior's, but a small French bakery in Bay Ridge, Jean Danet.

I no longer drink alcohol, but I love a good pina-colada smoothy.

14. If we looked on your bookshelf right now, what are some of the titles we would find?

A big collection. I've lived here since 1977, and have the luxury of a spare room. Religion, social work and psychology, mysteries, science fiction,  books on writing and in increasing number of Romance novels, although most of those are on my e-reader.

15. Where can we find you on the internet?

(Sample of my story and a deleted scene available there)

My free erotica is at http://www.nifty.org/nifty/frauthors.html under my name, Ike Rose.

Sneak Peek into My Valentine Prince
Found in My Sexy Valentine Anthology

On Valentine's Day, 1977, a blue-collar college educated biker-hunk who has  fought his own internalized homophobia and class prejudices to raise up the  corporate ladder has to choose which of two men he loves is his Prince  Charming: the one he thought he’d never see again, or the one he’d been  dating for a year while building a relationship.

EXCERPT:

Twenty-three year old James Harahan wandered into his first gay bar by mistake in the spring of 1975.

Jim had dreamed nightly of sex with older, masculine guys since he was fifteen.
In his nightly dreams, the same hairy, muscular man with straight black hair, streaks of gray at the temples, confidently took Jim in his arms, and drowned him in a passionate kiss that lead to sexual delights beyond his knowledge that always ended with Jim's magnificent orgasm. But he never saw his dream-lover's face or manhood, just his hot, manly body...
He scanned the room with alcohol-addled eyes, he wanted to find his dream-man!
A new man had entered the bar: a Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy in full dress uniform.
The way he took command of the bar impressed Jim.
He began aggressively focusing only on Jim, moving smoothly towards him like a stalking hunting animal about to leap on his prey. Jim couldn't take his eyes from him, transfixed and spellbound.
The other men in the bar vanished.

"Give him two big glasses of water, and a cup of black coffee!" he barked at a bartender in a deep voice, flipping a twenty towards the bar.

Jim found one of the glasses of water miraculously in his hands. That deep commanding voice barked with humor, "Now drink your water. I prefer to have my fun with a man who's conscious."
At that implied sexual invitation, Jim began gulping his water down, to the rich laughter of the seaman. "Take it easy, sailor. No need to drown. Now, drink some coffee."
Jim wasn't about to argue with this man, obviously used to being obeyed. No, Jim would obey his orders, hopefully leading to his secret desires. Jim obediently picked up the mug, almost scalded his mouth on it, downing the atrocious black coffee. He finished the first glass of water to wash his burning mouth.

The uniformed stud held out a big, work-roughened hand, saying, "We should introduce ourselves. Max Murphy."
Jim shook his hand, clutching it after they shook. "Jim Harahan. Thanks for rescuing me, Chief. I didn't realize how bombed I'd gotten."
"You were ready to be shanghaied, Jim. Ready for some more coffee and water, handsome?"
No man had ever made a pass at Jim before. "Max, this is my first time in a gay bar. I didn't know it was one when I came in to forget my problems."
Max firmly held Jim's face. "But you stayed, Jimmy. Are you willing to talk and see what might happen?"
"I do need to sober-up before riding my Harley, so why the hell not? But I want some milk in that next cup. That coffee's shit-water."
Max gave a rich laugh which made Jim's balls ache. "You're on, buddy. Lots of water."
Jim was smashed, but noticed that while Max made sure he drank plenty of water, his interest in getting in Jim's pants caused coffee to disappear from the menu.

Guest Author Day with Neil Plakcy

Plotting the Romance by Neil Plakcy
Find more about this author HERE
First of all, what is plot? A good definition might be “the series of events that give a story its meaning and effect.”
In traditional romance novels, the plot is typically that two people meet, fall in love, encounter obstacles, surmount them, and then live happily ever after. But how does that translate into the actual book?
I use a technique that I learned in graduate school, one based on the three-act structure of screenwriting. I’ll use the first book in my Have Body, Will Guard series, Three Wrong Turns in the Desert, as an example.
I start out with an idea. In this case it was “I want to run away.” I remember clearly driving home from my college teaching job one day, cranky with my partner about something, thinking how great it would be to just pick up and leave.
But my teacher protagonist, Aidan Greene, couldn’t be walking away from a positive relationship. That’s not very sympathetic. Instead, suppose he was kicked out by his long-term partner, for no good reason. In desperation, he opened up his computer and searched for a job somewhere far away, teaching English as a Second Language.
No book has only one inspiration, at least for me. I remembered a photo on my hard drive, of a well-built naked man showering outdoors. I decided that would be Liam McCullough, professional bodyguard. Aidan lands in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, and while walking around before his job is to start, he catches a glimpse of Liam showering naked.

So I’ve brought my characters together and started the sparks flying. But what happens next? I needed some action. So I killed someone.
I’ve been writing a mystery series for years, so that’s my first reaction. Drop a body in to the action and see what happens.
At this point I had to sit down and brainstorm where this book was going, and that’s where screenplay structure comes in. A screenplay is divided into three acts. At the end of Act 1, there’s a plot point, an action that shifts the direction of the book and sends it going somewhere else. In Three Wrong Turns in the Desert, it’s the first time Aidan and Liam have sex, about page 90. That’s when they both admit to falling in love.
Up to this point, Liam has been pressuring Aidan for his help, which Aidan has been providing reluctantly. Now, Aidan commits to the adventure whole-heartedly. He wants to ride the first wave of love and see where it goes, even if that takes him out in the desert on a crazy adventure.
Once I knew what that point would be, I just had to write my way there, developing the characters and seeing what kind of trouble they would get into. As I approached that first plot point, though, I had to start thinking about the end of the second act, when things would change again.
What was that going to be? Aidan and Liam were heading toward a rendezvous with a Tuareg tribe in the Sahara. What would happen when they found the tribe, though? They thought they were trying to connect with this tribe to hand over the number of a Swiss bank account, intended to help these nomads make the transition to settled life.
What they didn’t know until they found the tribe, though, was that the money was in exchange for a piece of information the tribe had. Once Aidan and Liam had that information, everything changed. They couldn’t simply turn around and go home. They had to act on what they knew, calling on Liam’s background as a former US Navy SEAL, and Aidan’s clever resourcefulness.
As soon as I knew what that piece of information was, I knew what the third act would involve. I wasn’t a hundred percent sure how the book would end, but I did know that I had to keep on building their relationship as Aidan and Liam continued on this quest. I looked for small ways to show their deepening love, as they shared more about their backgrounds and their emotions. And all the time I tried to keep the tension going as things keep making their situation more difficult.
I’m a happy ending kind of guy. Why go to all the trouble of inventing this great couple and making them attractive to each other only to break them up at the end? Not for me. But how exactly were Aidan and Liam going to get out of the situation? Where were they going to end up?
Those answers came to me as I wrote my way feverishly toward the end. That always happens to me-- my fingers can’t type fast enough to spin the story out for me. I want to know how things come out! I want to feel that rush of exhilaration as Aidan and Liam both recognize that their relationship is deeper than just hot sex on a desert run.
I said above that plot is the series of events that give a story its meaning and effect. Putting Aidan and Liam through all these dangers makes them recognize that they are kindred souls, and that they belong together. They earn that happy ending through facing their fears and overcoming obstacles. By the end of the book, the reader has suffered through those things, too, and can revel in the idea that love conquers all-- even a series of three wrong turns in the desert.
There are two books so far in the Aidan & Liam series, with a third coming in 2011:

Three Wrong Turns in the Desert
LGBT Suspense
From the moment he sees handsome Liam McCullough showering naked behind a Tunisian bar, ESL teacher Aidan Greene wants to screw the sexy bodyguard. At first, though, a dead courier and beefy hired thugs get in the way. But Liam soon convinces him -- with wiles and smiles and solid logic -- to join him on a race across the desert for a rendezvous with a Tuareg tribe at a remote oasis. Then nothing can stop them from getting naked and getting it on. Together they explore the passion Liam hid from as a closeted Navy SEAL, and the love Aidan's missed after his longterm boyfriend kicked him to the curb.

From the back of a motorcycle to a Turkish bath to a remote dune in the desert, these two Romeos find ways to bring each other to the heights of pleasure. So what if they’re carrying the password to a million-dollar Swiss bank account and being chased by Libyan intelligence agents determined to stop them at all costs? Love and lust fuel their passion and not even three wrong turns in the desert will keep them from surviving this adventure alive -- and together.
