WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

A LOOK BACK 3

With a new HOT release STEEL EMBRACE coming out from Carnal Passions (a companion house to Champagne Books) this coming August, we'd like to take a look back at our literary journey over the next couple of weeks with this publisher, last week we took a glimpse at SANAKE DANCE. This week it's CHASING YESTERDAY.

The Story: CHASING YESTERDAY

THE STORY

In the mist, haze, and shadows of the seashore, Elizabeth seeks out the man who has haunted her dreams forever. Around her love vibrates within others, couples from the youngest to the oldest, each providing a nugget of love’s truth that aids her in her chase of Nathan Sterling.

Yet, each time she catches Nathan, he seems to slip away, making her wonder if her timing is off, if she was perhaps rushing what destiny had promised. What she doesn’t realize is that her pursuit threatens to reveal a dire truth… one that will change her forever after

EXCERPT 1

Now and then a wave caught up to her feet, swirling over it then retreating. The day
had a gray cast to it, fog seeping over the jetties, as vendors set up, a ritual performed with tenacious repetitiveness for decades. The air was filled with the snap and flap of the cloth of many flags being placed outside of now opening businesses. A thud
sounded nearby. Her body swiveled toward the sound, and discovered a vendor planting a beach umbrella in the sand, an advertisement for his chairs, rafts and colorful umbrellas. Running behind him, she saw a familiar crop of thick, slightly wavy hair, a profile that created spasms of delight as well as a shiver that contradicted the heat rising up from the sand.

It was him!

Was it?

It was!

She knew the cut of him, the width of shoulders, narrowness of his hips, the sculpture physique and the perfection of his profile. For a moment, she just stood there, blinked, a surge of disbelief, for in all her certainty somehow she didn’t expect this sudden sighting. She had waited for so long, and now… now… he was there.

Wasn’t he?

Could it be true?

Was she mistaken?

EXCERPT 2

Strolling on the sidewalk, away from the beach, moving through summer people-clusters, Elizabeth nibbled on salt water taffy. She had watched them making it through a window and she couldn’t resist. Just as she swallowed the last bite, a form caught her attention. A small gasp, a quick soft smile, a look that linked the distance spanning them occurred as Elizabeth whispered, “It’s him.”

As if he heard her words, his expression spoke of someone searching, seeking, sliding over this one woman and that one, he was looking. For her, she fancied. And then they made eye contact, the connection radiated an understanding that he wanted
to meet her. She could see it in him, felt it flow over that distance of several feet that seemed like only inches. He actually made the gesture, took a step toward her. The flutter of nerves flitted across every extremity with most of the anxiousness residing in
her belly. Another step toward her.

“Nathan…”

One of my favorite Series is back~Knights of the Darkness Chronicles by DN Simmons

When I go looking for a book or series, I always look for three items to make me want to pick it up.

1) Good storyline-it has to hook me by end of chapter one in order for me to read more.
2) Intriguing characters-I need more than one dimensional characters. I need those bad boys with hearts of gold, the women who can tame said bad boys and strong characters that won't turn around and become TSTL*.
3) I need the sex scenes to enhance said storyline, not take it over completely.
*To stupid to live

I am a story snob-100%. Sometiumes the cover doesn't do it for me but if the book blurb intrigues me, I will pick it up and nine times out of ten, I found a gem to keep.

I "meet" author D. N. Simmons when I first started reviewing, years ago and I loved that she was self-publishing her work and had a series that sounded so ambitious, it had me curious. I got her first book, Desires Unleashed and I was hooked by end of chapter one. It had vampires, shifters, mystery, romance and sex all rolled up with a blood red bow.

Since then I have eagerly anticipated the next adventure in this series and with each book, she just kept getting better and better, IMHO. Yes there were earlier editing mistakes and whatnot but she recently had the books re-edited and made them polished so brightly they practically blind you when reading. Now the earlier books have awesome new covers and a brand new book was released, The Lion's Den, this year as well.

Now let me take you into the world of the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles and author D. N. Simmon's vivid imagination.

Book 1: Desires Unleashed introduces you to the world of supernaturals, humans and the world they live in now. It's a new time as humans and supernaturals co-exist in uneasy harmony. A supernatural serial killer is on the loose in Chicago and it will take the efforts of two detectives from the S.U.I.T (Supernatural Unit Investigation Team), the supernatural community and a few select humans to find a way to beat this mad man before it's too late. Here is where we meet the main players-Master Vampire Darian, his second in command and lover, Xavier, Eloise and the Cheetah Pride and the human woman, Natasha, who will find herself thrust in the middle of it all.

Book 2: The Guilty Innocent continues the story as Darian, Xavier and Natasha find themselves trying to find out who set up Darian for a crime he didn't commit. It will take Xavier, Natasha and all their friends to find out who did this and why before all hell breaks loose.

Book 3: The Royal Flush has a threat after the vampires, pack and pride shifters on the edge. A team of big game hunters are hunting the ultimate game-supernaturals.  Can Darian, Xavier and all their friends find a way to stop them before it's too late?

Book 4: Hostile Territory now has Darian, Xavier and Natasha in a relationship (M/M/F Threesome) and as they try to accept the changes in their lives, an event happens that will either bring them closer together or destroy everything-and everyone-in their lives.

Book 5: The Lions Den continues as Darian, Eloise, Xavier and other supernaturals find out that a dangerous menance is about to tear their territory apart and they have no idea who is the hunter and who is the prey. It's their deadliest enemy to date as they have no care who they hurt and the pain they cause.

Are you ready to experience the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles? Hang on to your seats as the ride is about to get wild and bumpy. You don't want to miss any of these wonderful books and I can't wait to read The Lion's Den.

Want to find out more about this author and the Knights series? Come on over to her website HERE and see what tickles your fancy. This series is available for Amazon Kindle, the nook and in trade paperback.

THE ESSENCE OF A HERO
BY
Angelica Hart and Zi

The hero of a story must reach into the reader's heart and soul, making he/her believe in that character's reality, must make them want to cheer them on, must ache when they hurt, cringe when they are embarrassed, fear when they are threatened, and cry if they die. But what makes a hero? How do we as writer's reach that conclusion? How do we perceive the essence that will bring about the desired results and have a man say, oh yeah, I'd following him and face the hordes of hell, or a woman yearn to be safe in his arms. We obsess over finding just the right blend of traits and we believe we have touched on one in particular. Russell Crowe… Best Actor. Works for me. Gladiator… Best Film… a study in heroes. Their hero-dom arose from their leadership qualities.

I’d like to exam Russell Crowe in Gladiator and specifically only the first five minutes of the movie. In my view it was these five minutes that set this movie and this character out to be something special. He breathed humanity into the armor clad Maximus. A time when his struggle through life was far from what we’d think humane yet he was strong as well as compassionate.

I saw a portrait of passion coupled with honor. Maximus was magnanimous. Your first vision of him shows an unkempt bearded clear-eyed man. Set poised in the snow flurries of a winter day focused on the moment. Unaffected by the climate. His proud walk amidst his troops reflected an honest connection. His version of high fives, fist to fist, depicted a sharing of strength and a man willing to touch his charges. A man not at arms length but approachable. It was obvious he stood shoulder to shoulder with them during battles. It was the image of a man’s man. A man who’d take the back of his brother-in-arms. Additionally, qualities of one whom was a leader. Not an order giver… but a man in the trenches and showing the way.

He described his army as “…lean and hungry.” Simplistic yet speaks volumes. Their physical shape. Fat free… Un-contented. Focused on a goal. Everything an athlete wishes to be prior to any contest. Everything any businessperson wishes to be prior to any deal. These three words connected to the deep-seated competitor found in most.

When Maximus’ second in command reacted to the Horde’s refusal to surrender with, “They don’t know when they are conquered,” Maximus stoically replied, “Would you… would I?” He honored his foe… his second in command… and himself with respecting the never quit… never give in… never say die attitude. Tenacity toward attaining a goal is a powerful belief, which is held high in the view of most.

His personal preparation for the moment of truth, the battle, was that he stooped, took dirt into his hands and rubs them with it. This unpretentious moment of focus showed a simple man. The dirt absorbing the sweat of his hands, hands that would be his tools in the fight. An act of readiness, a point of demarcation, the line between General and Warrior was seen in this private moment.

His look at his dog, a powerful dog, which showed a man who was complex enough to have such a loyal cur. Historically, an image of a dog as a man’s friend helps show a character deep, confident and human.

Maximus’ salutation to his second in command was “Strength and honor.” Pure genius. Strength…force… power… might… energy… intensity… vigor… brawn… virility. Honor…integrity… honesty… morality… regard… dignity… rectitude. A balance between power and integrity.

Maximus’ final order was “At my signal… unleash Hell!” If you never fought you might not understand. If we fight we must fight to win. I believe this. If we choose to do something, do it as well as we can. Half-fast is half-assed. I respect the pureness of this attitude because it respects the mission of the moment.

A leader emerged before my eyes. Maximus joined his cavalry, the force with which he would be riding into battle. It was at this point in time he showed himself to be a man of vision. Explore the quote, “Imagine where you will be and it will be so…” Visionaries can make great leaders. Their visions capture their followers. But a visionary without substance, i.e., an idea man, does not a leader make. A vision coupled with a willingness to do what’s imagined is the purest form of leadership.

The five minutes ends with this statement by Maximus, “What we do in life echoes in eternity.” The essence of the dream/desire that we want to make a difference on time. We matter. Not just our time but all time. We want to be remembered. We want a legacy. We understand we’re fragile creatures whose fate in life is that we die. So between birth and death what we do must matter. If we can’t buy into to that then we question our purpose to exist at all. We sense our soul will have a life-after thought that is intangible but that tangible life-after is reflected in the monuments we build to ourselves, and these are usually in the forms of accomplishments, people that we have truly affected and our children.

Maximus rises out of these five minutes as a man’s man leader, an unpretentious visionary with a grasp of the magnitude of the moment, a man with an eye on the goal and a passion to do what is essential to achieve it. Powerful stuff.

This is a great man’s flick. However, this was not a chick flick but Maximus is also the personification of a woman's hero.

I share this because it helps define the rare qualities of a real man with character and strength and when we word picture heroes we have to start with an essence. I wrote this many years ago and maybe out-dated but the concept of hero is never.

So why share the aforementioned point of view? As caretakers of the genesis of the characters in our stories, we hold a responsibility to every reader to grabble with imagery and respect the iconic ideals, such as heroism.

In closing, we try to take these and similar traits into the embodiment of our heroes. Though they may be uniquely different in personality, they have that similar underlying core of values, strength, and determination. The sort of man that will cut himself fairly badly but will finish what he is doing before tending to that wound. The sort of man who a woman will feel safe with even when she feels quite capable of protecting herself. The sort of man who will climb into your world, and will stay a part of it, forever.

At least that is what we hope to bring to our heroes. If you read our stories, you'll have to let us know if you agree.

WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

We'd like to chat about what inspired us to write, where we get our ideas, and our creative differences.

About inspiration:

A: As a child, I adored being read to, but I also enjoyed watching the expressions on my family's faces as they read to me. They were as entertained as I reading the adventures of Princesses, of mice, of frogs, of siblings, of witches, and more. These fairy tales inspired me so much that I decided I wanted to entertain my family with my own stories, written, at first, in the cave man style of pictures, and then as I learned to write, by self-publishing my own little books. And, I haven't stopped, going from crayons and paper to a typewriter with a sticky L key to finally computers. I started to write to entertain, and I confess, it is now an addiction that I never wish to cure.

Z: The pretentious answer would be the power and influence I saw in the words of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. And that would be true. But it is more complicated. I wrote the lyrics to a song in high school that captured the social moment and I felt my peers were moved, I was pleased. In college, my Creative English professor confessed she cried after reading my piece, but none-the-less
failed my paper. Thus the tears gave me validation that I was good. I wrote to draw them. Who cares if I didn't understand a dangling participle. My second Language professor failed a paper which I later submitted to a magazine without editorial change, which was published. Again, the validation was in the reason. I wanted to make the man angry. I did, and was failed not out of anything but his bias. But, I must share that possibly the most profound motivation was that of my wooing a woman. Protecting her identity, her pet name to me was Princess Vi. To make a long story a little longer, we were held at a distance because of careers but I know, because she told me so, I captured her heart through my hand-penned letters. We would have been intended but life is never fair.

Ideas and creative differences:

Z: Second question first, every frick-frackin' day we have creative differences. When ever we write this column we explore some of the clashes and how we, via our sense of humor, avoid being charged with first degree homicide. Angelica is didactic.

A: Moi? Am not. Since when did I ever give any evidence of being preachy? I'll answer the first question. Didactic! Sorry, I digressed. As we previously noted on a previous blog we lamestorm. We set aside an entire day where we bring together ideas and like a game of war, we place them in the center of the table to see if one is more powerful than the other. In a single elimination tournament we eventually ascertain that idea which has the least amount of lameness attached to it. Then we research. And if it seems entertaining, we will outline. If not, it will go into our huge circular idea file.

Z: Where Angelica will dig hers out, and bring them back to the next session.

A: Do not...aw...already, I do, but they are such goooood ideas!

Z: Time to agree to disagree.

A: Buy lunch and I'll agree.

Z: Eating is always a running theme with you, isn't it.

A: Your point?

Z: Want fries with that?

WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

People ask us all the time how we meet, what made us decide to become writing partners, and how long we've been writing individually and as partners, so we thought we share.

Z: In the eighties sitting just west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the grassy foothills at the base of the Grand Tetons, looking across the Snake River at a bull moose I began to read a piece I had just written in my journal out loud for the moose to hear. Yup, did it! I learned the moose was not my audience as he meandered deeper into the high grass but I was not discouraged and continued at the top of my speaking voice. About seven feet from me sat a molting coyote engrossed in my presentation. Its eyes held me as if a pup or its suckling mother and I felt one with that energy. Stunned that it did not run, amazed at its calmness in the face of my presence I continued. When I was done, the canine rose, walked next to me, rubbed its matted fur on my arm, passed, and it was lost to the high grass. It left upon me its musk, telling me I was one of its pack. In the capture of that moment in time, I felt validated as a writer. Years later, sitting over coffee, talking about writing, I felt that same validation again, and that person was Angelica Hart. I understood destiny.

A: Everyone has felt that thing that has been called the click, and the ease at which Zi and I purported from the first instant was astonishing. There was an immediate synergy that told me that one and one equaled three. I read his work, was moved. We lamestormed which is our practice of presenting ideas and deeming them lame or not. Of twenty ideas, ten from each, not one idea had merit. Our potential partnership stalled before it started. Then in an email, Zi sent me a touching fantasy love story, where a Mage stole a young man's heart so the woman he loved could soar. He gave it willingly. I cried. I understood destiny.

A/Z: As for our writing together and apart: I was at an Evelyn Woods Speed Reading Class and the instructor said, "We are the sum of all our experiences." There it was a truth that stood above simple truths. As I began to write I recognized that I had very limited experiences upon which to pull. My early work was unquestionably shallow. So I began a quest to discover, in the name of wanting to be a better writer? No! I realized I was shallow.

Initially every submission sent to publishers was returned or ignored. I recall a critique suggesting I needed more depth in both the way I dealt with the subject and the technical writing style. As time ate at my life I waited as I worked. Wrote daily. How much life is lost to wait? That is an apt question, but my wait was filled with discovery. I became a student of people. Discovery. Examined other styles and broke them down mechanically and technically. Discovery. Tried to create more complexity. Discovery. Expanded my vocabulary. Discovery. Read...read...read. Discovery. Wrote...re-wrote...re-re-wrote. That wait was not shallow but an aggressive tutorial for my growth. I continued to submit work. And slowly pieces were accepted.

So the question is who am I? Angelica or Zi? Ironically, we took the same path and had the same challenges and failures. We met as more mature adults prepared to be writers and for a significant amount of time, we have written daily as writing partners. We found a synergy in our styles and complexity in what we wanted to create. Are we good? We don't know. Have we found that depth needed to portray characters as real people? Hope we have. Have we found enough intrigue in our
plot and our words to keep readers interested? You tell us. As Jacob Bronowski, a mathematician, well-spoken and a celebrity of the BBC show The Ascent of Man and was the inspiration of Carl Sagan to make the Cosmos wrote, "The world is full of people who never quite get into the first team and who just miss the prizes at the flower show." If runners up is what we are, we're proud, for our journey has been wonderful.

Zi believes, "Be the best you can be by growing every day." Having said that, goodness, that was something (our hard work) we doubt we'd forget. And you'll notice propriety has kept us from attaching dates, though, long is long and it has been a long time. You can smell the posies on our lapels, none are planned to be lilies soon.

We'd love to hear from anyone interested in what we do. Anyone who writes us at angeliahartandzi@yahoo.com and leaves an s-mail address, we will send you a gift and add you to any future mailings.

WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

Howdy Rowdy!

For today's offering, we'd like to leave you some poetry and prose straight from Zi's literary vault.

Z: Hey, I how did you find them? I had them in an innocuous file and under password protection.
A: (wiggles brows) Nor lock or key is safe from me. 'Tis time to share the ponderings of your lair. Besides, you see, my poetry is stinky!
Z: I wouldn't say that.... (Re-reads her words and grimaces.) Then again...
A: Oh hush, let's let everyone enjoy.

A note from Zi to you:

M'dear,

Step upon my wings of imagination…join me…for I am about to sojourn to a place of magic wonderment. This is my place. Where I still feel like a child. Broccoli tastes like jelly beans. Every dog talks. Books smell like peaches. And the Sunshine never burns but enriches.

My thoughts are with you. I hope this finds you well.

Consider a first date, titled, “The Lady Gets Wings”. Every angel should have their wings. We walking hand-in-hand eventually spontaneously skipping to town square. The streets are dustless cobblestone. Never a car allowed upon them. People scurry from shop to shop. Spinning as they greet others. Gentlemen bow and ladies curtsy.

“How do you do!”

“And you!”

Then spin a good bye and off they go to the next greeting to be spun.

Music fills our air yet, neither of us know its origin. Music comes from the energy of being. Happy. Music is because we are. The baker devines fluffy sounds. The florist glows a melody of lilting joy. Music becomes the extension of our souls…and poetry our own private dance of possibilities.

Respectfully yours in muse,

Zi

POSSIBILITIES

You are my possibility
My friend to be
My muse
My paramour
My future
You are my possibility
And I am profoundly
Pleased.

A Hug

Strength is an amazing thing
Power is an absolute aphrodisiac
Humanity finds it a sign of strength
Hugging is not weakness
Asserting one's strength; good
But asserting one's strength
As well as their heart
Awesome... simply awesome

SMITTEN

I am smitten, I fear.
How did that happen?
You are the muse that tweaks my prose,
the romantic who touches my spirit.
It is not possible to be smitten by a reader,
to fall into the abyss of what they desire,
in tales, in narratives, in scenes of love.
To not even know the color of a woman's eyes,
yet long to conquer the nectar of her soul.
To fuel her desire and capture her romantic heart.
I am smitten with you.
Will you be smitten by my words?

KILLER DOLL DIP IF YOU MUST, SNAKE DANCE WHEN YOU CAN, WHILE CHASING YESTERDAY ALONG WITH ANGELICA HART AND ZI WHILE HAVING A CHAMPAGNE BOOKS' COCKTAIL

We thought we'd share something a bit different this week. Something that will entertain you in a different way. Hence, this is a gun moll's disarm your gang, take their money, and run dip.

Recipe:
Buy Velveeta Processed Cheese. Big block not little.
Buy premade chili. This could be from anywhere you wish it to be. It could be your own. It could be your grandmother's, it could be from a fast food establishment. Bottom line, have chili.
Buy Salsa. This is key. Spicy is key. Hotter the better is key. But if you are a wimp back off the heat.
Take all things home in an environmentally friendly bag. Place on counter. Fold bag for reuse.
Look at bag and be proud of who you are.
Sing your national anthem. Singing is optional especially if your voice is mal-toned.
Oops!
Run back to the store and get whatever you need to dip into the dip unless you were aware that edible dipping appliances were necessary.
Back home again.
Anticipate when dipping will commence. If this is complicated, use paper, pencil and calculator.
Ten minutes before you are ready for the dippers to consume, start!
Take big bowl. Make certain it is microwave safe.
Put cubed Velveeta in aforementioned bowl. One inch cubes are ideal. Half inch cubes are better but it takes more time so add two minutes to advanced preparation time.
Add chili.
Add salsa.
We're guessing at this point you would like to know how much of each. Good question.
Equal volumes of each.
Microwave and stir periodically.
Once mused as a blend and not quite scalding to the touch it is ready.
Serve.
Eat.
Enjoy.
Lie to your friends that this is an old family recipe and offer them hand-scribed copies.
You're welcome.

We'd love to hear from anyone interested in what we do. Anyone who writes us at angeliahartandzi@yahoo.com and leaves an s-mail address, we will send you a gift and add you to any future mailings.

My Review for Druids Dawning

When I first read the blurb for this new series at Silver Publishing, I was quite intrigued. I haven't seen any druid series like this before and the author seemed to have given a breath of fresh air to this genre.

Druids Dawning is an interesting story filled with magic, desires, mystery and of course, the paranormal. If you are looking for an enjoyable story, then this may fit the bill.

About Druids Dawning:

Mitch Walker has just become a new member of The Order. Receiving two very special gifts after being inducted has him confused and stressed, especially as the power of forethought leaves him reeling in visions he can’t figure out. Struggling to figure how to work his gifts, he also finds himself desiring his co-worker, Jill. With the confused feelings and the visions, Mitch is slowly feeling like he is going nuts until he has a vision that leaves him scared and afraid. A serial killer is on the loose and dark magic is at the core of the kills. Can Mitch and his fellow Druids find a way to stop this madman before the dark ritual is complete with one last murder?

Druids Dawning is a sexy, edge of the seat ride from start to finish. I never knew where this author will take me when I was flipping the pages and it was the biggest thrill, in my opinion.  The characters were complex and life-like that added to my enjoyment and overall, the story flowed smoothly.

Lark LaTroy delivers a solid introduction to the NeoDruids and I am eager to see what happens next for The Order and Mitch.Lark LaTroy is now on my to be read list and I am eager to see what the next adventure is for Mitch, Jill and the Druids.

I give it 3.75 out of 5 stars

MUFFFINMAN

“Two old Bachelors were living in one house; One caught a Muffin, the other caught a Mouse.” ~ Edward Lear

Days later, Cinderella was bent at the waist, her midriff top sagging down, providing a view of her pendulous booby-blossoms to anyone standing directly in front and or behind her as she was watering her marigolds. Was that on purpose?

Two bees, recent grads from the Academy of Honey Management and Sting U, bumped heads as they caught sight of Cindi's twin gifts. Barry B. Benson being an interspecies romancer, gave his bud, Adam Flayman, a honey maker from Honex, a nudge and wink, took a vid with his miniature cell phone, intending to post it on You Bee Tube after first scrutinizing it in the privacy of his own comb. Wouldn't you Bee tempted to do the same? Unaware of the excitement she was about to stir in the insect world, Cindi heard a woman cussing and bemoaning. "What'sup?" Cindi asked.

The woman's expression twisted into what could have been a pleasing face, but few noticed anything beyond her clangers. (Yes, we mean boobage so enormous that one could almost hear them clang together with each breath she took...for whom the bell tolls...in Cindi's case...all) "That man just insulted me," complained the woman.

Unbeknownst to Cindi, the Muffinman when he handed the woman a sack of Bran-news told her the child she was carrying may have been the most unsightly thing in the Kingdom. That's rude!

She was still spitting and hissing incoherently, which was more oft the reaction of males as they considered what it would be like to.... Oh, you know, what males always want to do when they.... Best end it there! Nonetheless, spitting and hissing!

Cindi offered support in the form of compassionate indignation, chest out, legs planted apart. Unbeknownst to her, Barry and Adam were on the ground, on their backs, looking up, film at eleven.

Cindi, though not knowing the insult, told her to go back and confront him. Get her anger off her chest. And Cindi understood chest. Go girl!

"That's good advice. You are wise for being so young. I'm going to do it."

Cinderella, trying to be helpful, said knowing many in their village spoke better with their hands, "Let me hold your chimp." Ta dump dump! (Rim shot!)

The woman huffed off.

Cinders waved to the Muffinman who shouted, "Did we get another?"

"Sure did!" She jumped up and down as giddy females often did, top parachuting, showing booBEEs, in so she buried Adam beneath one of her sandals. Lucky for Adam the ground was soft from her watering.

Chatting with Lizzie T. Leaf

Can you tell us a little about how you started writing; was it something you have always wanted to do?
Making up stories in my head is something I’ve done for as long as I can remember.  In school, when the English teacher said, “time to write a short story,” most of the class groaned but I celebrated.  It usually meant an A.  I did attempt to seriously write at numerous times over the years and I won’t bore anyone with details, but it’s safe to say, life got in the way.
After I became widowed, pouring out grief in a diary eventually led to attempting a short story.  When I gathered the courage to show the story to the new man in my life and he asked why was I wasting my time on other things instead of writing, he pushed me off the fence where I’d been teetering for so long.
I joined a writing group, met three aspiring writers new to the group, and we bonded together as critique partners.  All three of us are now published.

Who or what has been your biggest influence as a writer?
I’ve always loved to read and as I stated earlier, make up stories in my head.  The buried dream became reality through the encouragement of my now husband.  He’s my rock and when things aren’t going well with a book, he’s there to listen to me grumble and the prod me to keep at it.

Your work is very popular with readers and reviewers; how does it feel to have such positive recognition for your work?
I love it when a reader emails or comes up to me to say how much they enjoyed a book of mine.  The comments I get most are on the characters and the humor.  I love humor!

What do you consider to be the key elements of a great story?
Theme or the central idea, setting to give the reader enough information to visualize where the story takes place, enough conflict to keep the story moving forward, a plot that relates to conflict and characters that a reader can like, hate (antagonist) or identify with.

Could you tell us a little about how you develop your characters? Who has been your favorite character to write?  The most challenging?
I have a mental picture of what the character will look like and then write their story—their likes, dislikes, fears, family relationships, career, etc.
The one I’ve enjoyed the most so far is Emma in Beyond Magic.  Her tourism background brought back memories that made me laugh.
The most challenging, Amber in Call Me in trying ded to figure out the type of personality that could succeed in the world of phone sex.

Please tell us about the projects you are currently working on; what can readers expect to see in the coming months?
Another release in the Magical Love series is currently in the works.  This one will feature Cori, Emma’s roommate.
I’m also working on a Mainstream with a possible YA crossover to it.  Or at least my librarian friend, whom I shared the idea with, thinks that’s the case.  Time will tell.

Where can readers find out what's new and how can they contact you?
And my email is lizzietleaf@comcast.net    I enjoy email from readers!

Do you have a strict writing schedule? How do you balance your personal and writing time?
I attempt one, but am not always successful.  Things come up that divert me onto a path not planned.  On good days, I pop into email and the social sites for an hour and then close them out.  Sometimes to avoid temptation I’ll move to a laptop that has no internet in order to really focus on writing.
The balancing act can challenge this writer for sure.  Family is important to me and at times I put their wants first and then get annoyed with myself because it was something that could have waited.

Which author(s) is your favorite? And who has most influenced you work?
I enjoy a lot of authors.  Right now I’m caught up in Melissa Mayhue’s series, but have to put reading the new release on hold…dang!  Enjoy Robert McCammon, Dianna Gabaldon, Marie Treanor, Sam Cheever, Raine Delight, and have several books of my fellow Passion in Print authors waiting to be read.  When someone mentioned my work reminded them of Mary Janice Davidson, I had to get one of her books.  After reading it, I felt honored by the comparison and of course had to read more.  You see, my list goes on and on…LOL

Do you feel your writing is character driven or plot driven? How do you balance these two elements?
Probably character driven, but there has to be a plot, otherwise there would be nothing happening.  Even strong characters need conflict and a plot to create a story!

Excerpt:

Prologue

"Powers that be,
I ask of thee,
Show me the good,
Show me the bad,
Show me the ones,
I am to make glad."

Hands, gnarled and wrinkled, old as time itself, waved back and forth over the crystal ball. Fog obscured what moments earlier had been clear glass. As the mist dissipated, the blurred image of a man appeared.
The Cailleach gasped and her eyes widened with surprise. "Nae, it canna be."
The face came into focus and she had no doubt about one of the lovers. She knew of no one else on any realm with hair that shade of gold, streaked with fire.
He ran a hand through the top of his unruly mop. Eyes, blue as the sapphire DooNell wore around her neck, stared directly at her for a moment, before turning to the computer screen on his desk.
Still unsure of what to make of the vision, the old hag started another chant and waved her hands across the glass orb once more.

"Powers that be,
Show more to me,
Show me the one fair,
Who needs to be there."

Once again, the fog in the ball swirled, then lifted. The hag stared at the face of a female. Not the young girl she expected, but a woman seasoned by life. The Cailleach watched as the female swept a heavy mane of rich auburn hair from her neck, and stared as if she viewed the hag. A puzzled frown puckered her brow, and her sherry colored eyes darkened. The crone's heart beat a rapid tattoo until she remembered she could not be seen by the mortal.
A woman's voice called from another room, "Emma, where are you?"
"In here, Cori. How was your day?" The one DooNell now knew to be Emma pulled a piece of chocolate out of the bag by her hand and popped it in her mouth before she turned toward the door behind her. "Sure hope it was better than mine."
Through no request from the old crone, the crystal ball clouded over and the image and voices were gone. The mist cleared again and two faces, side by side, now stared from the glass, each pair of eyes reflecting their longing for something unseen.
"So be it." The Cailleach bowed her head in surrender to what the Powers required. She pulled in a deep breath before summoning the energy she needed for the task ahead.
Eyes opened wide, arms outstretched, she set the magic in motion to bring two beings together.

"Winds of the earth,
Currents of the sea,
Let these two,
Find the love,
They need to be."

Slumping back in her chair, the Cailleach sighed. She had done her part to set their discovery of love for each other into play. Now it was up to the universe to carry it forth.
Far harder would be explaining to Oberon why she had interfered in the life of his only grandchild. Neither the Faerie King, nor the entities involved from the other realms, would be happy with her over this potential new love she'd just set into motion.
"Ah, DooNell, lass. May be it, you be getting too old for this business of magical love?"
She sighed and forced her weary bones from the chair. There was much to do if the will of the Powers could succeed, and she had been given the task to make sure it did. Too many worlds were involved to leave the uniting of Emma and Ian to chance.

WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

Last week we talked about balance in a partnership, particularly our own. This week we want to share a short story whose theme is all about equality.

YOUR TURN
By
Angelica Hart and Zi

"You know you have to do it." He shared that look he learned from his mother.

"I can't." She wanted to channel the Paris Hilton spoiled debutante persona.

"But we've agreed on taking turns."

Jillian hunched her shoulders, the tension gathering in her chest and radiating to her back, wishing she never proposed such a consistently equal balance in all things. It was originally her idea to make certain they each did their share of chores and responsibilities. "I'll take the next two turns." She tried to negotiate.

"We promised to never do that." Brice handed her the bottle of poison. "I took care of Mandy, now you have to take care of Charlie." He canted his head in that way to say a deal’s a deal.

Sunlight announced itself, streaming into the already bright and cheery kitchen, all contrasting against the stark horror of her words. "It’s murder."

"You're exaggerating.”

“No, it is murder.”

“It's self-defense." He eyed her bandaged hand. "He did that to you, you can't escape that fact. Take your apt revenge."

She stared at the floor, not quite resigned. "Please... I just can't."

He touched her hair, floated his mouth over hers in the most gentle of kisses. They had been together for so long, yet there was always this wonder and awe when they touched. "I'd give in this one time, darling, I would, but I don't have the time, I have a flight to catch.”

As if a staged play, a knock sounded at the door.

Brice glanced over his shoulder. "The shuttle's here." He pulled her against him, squeezed, and gave her a bye-got-to-go kiss. "Be brave."

"You'll never look at me again in the same way."

"Do you think less of me for getting rid of Mandy?"

She shook her head, not speaking and understanding.

"We do what has to be done. Besides, in all truth, it is...."

"I know," she interrupted and sighed, "My turn."

Another kiss and he was gone, leaving Jillian alone with the gruesome task. She stared at the bottle of poison, found the skull and crossbones overkill, and nearly laughed aloud at her thought. Taking a deep breath, she ignored any sentimental thought attached to the task ahead. She tried not to remember the fun times with Mandy and Charlie, those times before they betrayed Brice and her, the times when it was all fun and all play. She probably should have never talked Brice into allowing this peculiar couple into their home. In the end, it was her own fault, and now she had to do the right thing, that which was right in a very loose connotation of the word.

After gathering up the items she needed, she added the poison last, squeezing her eyes shut against a sudden prick of tears.

About to call for Charlie, he surprised her by entering the room.

"Would you like something to eat?" she asked feigning a smile.

He stared and she could see the manic look which had taken hold of him of late.
Knowing she had no choice, Jillian placed the trap on the kitchen floor and waited for the second of their once pet rats, who had escaped and turned feral, to take the poisoned bait.

The end

Reiterating last week's quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson on the point of balance, “Evermore in the world is this marvelous balance of beauty and disgust, magnificence and rats.”

WRITER'S WRITE...WRITING PARTNERS FEUD

WHEN ALL IS EQUAL AND BALANCED
By
Angelica Hart and Zi

In a writing partnership, one must maintain a sense of balance. Some might think of the gymnast’s struggles with that four inch wide beam and others may envision the scales of Libra or Justice. Whereas, we’ve discovered when we team up to create that balance it is more a dynamic equilibrium, not always equal but always balanced.

Everything is shared, but sometimes it is difficult to draw a line evenly down the center. Do we try? Angelica does. Zi’s a whatever-is-is guy. Do we care? A ngelica does. Zi learned as a child there are no real even–stevens. Some days you bite the bear and some days the bear bites you. Other days you just stand alone in the corner bare saying, why me… why all the time me. (That’s another blog) Does partnering work? Yes, in a clumsy and difficult way.

Case in point. Arguing with my sibling about pie, my Grammie came into the room, discerned the problem and handed me the knife to cut the pie. I studied and maneuvered the knife to leave one piece with ample raisins and crust, eyeing it for my taking. Once I finished cutting it, my grandmother turned to my sister and said, "You pick first." She taught even-steven was never even.

An idea might start with one of us, and then the other will infuse various thoughts. That is called The Infuse with Various Thoughts process. Angelica named it. Either could work the first draft of a story and, yet, there have been times we managed to work it together. Ok…the verb work could be exchanged with feud or fuss or argue or will it against the other. Ultimately, the creative accomplishments can be the gems that become fun and play between us. Because law requires that we point out the fun and have met the court ordered directive we are prepared to share more truth. There are those mundane tasks, and sometimes we are simply forced to take turns. Angelica believes in forcing. Zi opts for creative diversion.

Balance may be that left out shoe that trips us or the ruler of which we judge. We will leave you with a quote. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote on the point of balance, “Evermore in the world is this marvelous balance of beauty and disgust, magnificence and rats.”

A: Rats?
Z: Cool, huh?
A: (Ick face appears) Rats?
Z: They're actually kinda cute.
A: (Shudders) Rats....geeze...anything but rats.
Z: He could have said snakes.
A: (Horror appears) Rats aren't so bad.
Z: You just gotta love how that balanced out.
