Last week Tom Hooper's historical drama The King's Speech managed to retain its crown at the top of the box office despite competition from big budget action comedy The Green Hornet, and this week it's won another victory, this time against fellow awards hopeful Black Swan. Banking another £4.2m to claim first place for the third consecutive week, The King's Speech has now amassed a rather incredible £18.3m and with plenty of awards hype (including twelve Oscar nominations and fourteen BAFTA nods) you have to feel that the Colin Firth period piece could be in for a lengthy stay in the chart.
Although Black Swan only managed to claim second, an opening weekend of £2.7m is still a strong return for the Darren Aronofsky psychological thriller and pushes The Green Hornet down into third in its second weekend. In fourth place is the newly released Vince Vaughn comedy The Dilemma, which pulls in just £1.1m to continue the actor's run of diminishing returns here in the UK, while Jack Black 3D adventure Gulliver's Travels slips one place to round out the top five with a decent £13.7m to date.
Moving on to the bottom half of the chart, Danny Boyle's Best Picture nominated 127 Hours falls three places to sixth, with sequels Little Fockers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 both dropping one spot apiece to seventh and ninth respectively. Meanwhile the remaining two positions are occupied by new faces, with comedy Morning Glory taking eighth with £524k and Brit drama Neds propping up the chart with a weekend opening of £283k.
