Video: Director Peter Mullan and star Conor McCarron talk Neds
Neds is the third feature from Scottish actor/filmmaker Peter Mullan and arrives some nine years after the release of his previous directorial effort, the critically acclaimed (and Golden Lion-winning) drama The Magdalene Sisters. Shifting his focus to 1970s Glasgow, Mullan presents a gritty, brutal and stripped down slice of urban life centring on teenager John (newcomer Conor McCarron), who embarks on a downward spiral from promising academic to violent gang member [for those of you who may be wondering, 'ned' is basically a Scottish term for 'charva', although much of the film's promotional material would suggest it also stands for 'non-educated delinquents'].
Of course Mullan is equally as comfortable in front of the camera; after roles in the likes of Shallow Grave, Braveheart and Trainspotting he won a Best Actor Award at Cannes for Ken Loach's My Name is Joe, while recent acting gigs include Children of Men, Boy A and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. He also appears in Neds as McCarron's abusive father, and the pair have been out promoting the film. See what they have to say here...
