Video: Director Peter Mullan and star Conor McCarron talk Neds

Neds posterNeds is the third feature from Scottish actor/filmmaker Peter Mullan and arrives some nine years after the release of his previous directorial effort, the critically acclaimed (and Golden Lion-winning) drama The Magdalene Sisters. Shifting his focus to 1970s Glasgow, Mullan presents a gritty, brutal and stripped down slice of urban life centring on teenager John (newcomer Conor McCarron), who embarks on a downward spiral from promising academic to violent gang member [for those of you who may be wondering, 'ned' is basically a Scottish term for 'charva', although much of the film's promotional material would suggest it also stands for 'non-educated delinquents'].

Of course Mullan is equally as comfortable in front of the camera; after roles in the likes of Shallow Grave, Braveheart and Trainspotting he won a Best Actor Award at Cannes for Ken Loach's My Name is Joe, while recent acting gigs include Children of Men, Boy A and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. He also appears in Neds as McCarron's abusive father, and the pair have been out promoting the film. See what they have to say here...

Neds hits UK screens on January 21st.
