Aronofsky, Fincher, Hooper, Nolan and Russell to square off for the DGA Award

DGA logoThe Director's Guild of America have released the shortlist for their coveted DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2010, which could give us some indication of the contenders for the Best Director Oscar when the Academy Award nominations are unveiled on January 25th. The nominees, presented in alphabetical order, are as follows...

Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan)
David Fincher (The Social Network)
Tom Hooper (The King's Speech)
Christopher Nolan (Inception)
David O. Russell (The Fighter)

So, no love from the DGA for Oscar hopefuls Danny Boyle (127 Hours) and Joel and Ethan Coen (True Grit), and although it's rare for the Director's Guild nominees to match up perfectly with the Academy Award shortlist, I think in this instance they could be right on the button. It's also typical that the winner of the DGA Award will go on to collect the Oscar, which was the case last year when Kathryn Bigelow became the first female director to take home the Academy Award for The Hurt Locker.

The DGA - which is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2011 - will announce the winner on Saturday, January 29th at the 63rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner in Hollywood, California.
