A self-financed independent short from writer-director Joe Nussbaum, George Lucas in Love first came to attention in 1999 when it began circulating Hollywood prior to its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later that year. Inspired by both Star Wars and recent Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love, the film takes us back to 1967 when USC student George Lucas (Martin Hynes) is struggling with writer's block on his latest script, a space fantasy about a young farmer. Everyone he meets resembles characters from his upcoming masterpiece, but Lucas is unable to shake his creative shackles until he meets his muse in a rebellious young woman (Lisa Jakub).
George Lucas in Love enjoyed a successful festival run, picking up a number of awards including the Canal+ Short Film Award (Deauville American Film Festival), Audience Award (Florida Film Festival) and Pioneer Award (Official Star Wars Fan Film Awards), and reached #1 on Amazon.com's sales chart when released on VHS in 2000. Lucas himself offered a congratulatory letter to the filmmakers, while Nussbaum secured a deal with Dreamworks and has since went on to direct teen comedies Sleepover (2004), American Pie Presents The Naked Mile (2006) and Sydney White (2007).
